HONOLULU – Matt Cooper pitched a complete-game shutout and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team earned a much needed win, beating Gonzaga 2-0 on Tuesday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The teams conclude their series as UH improves to 2-15 while the Zags drop to 9-5-1.

Cooper (1-2) was masterful in guiding UH to its first win of the season at Les Murakami Stadium. He allowed just three Bulldog hits and threw a season-high 120 pitches. The nine-inning shutout was the first for UH since Alex Capaul blanked Fresno State in 2010.

Marc Flores continued his hot hitting tonight. He batted 3-4 with an RBI just one day after belting a double and UH's first home run. Conner George and Pi'ikea Kitamura added two hits each for the 'Bows who now have eight days off before beginning their series with Wichita State.

Mitchell Gunsolus led the Zags with two of their three hits. Billy Moon (0-1) was tagged with the loss in just two and one-third innings of work. He allowed two runs on six hits before being lifted for Arturo Reyes.

The Rainbows did all their damage in the second inning. Austin Wobrock (1 H, 1 R) kick started the inning when he bunted for a hit then advanced to third on Moon's errant throw to first base. Stephen Ventimilia (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) capitalized on the next at bat and brought home Wobrock on an infield single.

The 'Bows had a chance for a big inning but would score just once more.  Flores scored Ventimilia on a bases loaded hit to centerfield, but George grounded into a bases loaded inning-ending double play on the next at bat.

In the sixth inning, Flores showed the power he demonstrated on Monday when he belted a Moon pitch off the right centerfield wall. George legged out an infield grounder on the next at bat and after a Kaeo Aliviado sacrifice, the 'Bows had runners on second and third again with just one out.  They would come up empty though, as Tyler Young and Wobrock both struck out to end the threat.

Hawai'i and Wichita State start their five-game series on Wednesday, Mar. 20 at Les Murakami Stadium.
