HONOLULU – The 11
th-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team dropped a hard fought four-set decision to No. 8 Cal State Northridge Friday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-21, 17-25, 26-24, 25-23.
Sophomore
Brook Sedore led the Warriors (5-11, 4-9 MPSF) with 17 kills on .387 hitting and a career high-tying five aces. Freshman
Sinisa Zarkovic added 13 kills and seven digs. UH's third big gun
JP Marks did not play due to an illness.
As a team, UH hit .227 compared to .312 for the Matadors (8-6, 6-6), who were led by John Baker's 19 kills. Brandon Lebrock tallied 17 kills.
With the score tied at 15 in the first set, the Matadors got the separation they needed with back-to-back points, the latter when Zarkovic was triple-blocked. CSUN extended its lead to 23-19 after Travis Magorien stuffed
Jace Olsen. Moments later, Olsen served in the net giving the Matadors a 25-21 victory.
The Warriors got off to a good start in Set 2. UH led 12-8 forcing CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell to use both of his timeouts. The Matadors closed to within 12-11 but Hawai'i responded by scoring four straight and would not look back. Sedore served up back-to-back aces for a 20-12 lead and UH coasted to a 25-17 victory.
With UH leading 21-19 in Set 3, CSUN's Brandon Lebrock was credited with a kill after his attempt was blocked back into him bouncing off his shoulder and falling across the net. He followed that with another kill tying the score at 21. The teams traded points until the Matadors strung together three straight, stuffing Sedore on set point for a 26-24 victory.
CSUN jumped all over the Warriors in Set 4 scoring the first six points before UH closed to within 10-9. UH tied it at 15 and took a 16-15 lead following a hitting error by John Baker. The Warriors held a lead until back-to-back kills by Baker put CSUN on top 22-21. Moments later, Sedore's 17
th kills tied the score at 23 before Baker closed out the match with consecutive kills.
The teams will next play again Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
