HONOLULU – Jared Spiker won at both doubles and singles, but it wasn't enough as the University of Hawai'i Warrior tennis team lost to No. 73 Xavier, 4-3, on Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex. UH falls to 2-5 while Xavier improves to 10-2.
Doubles came down to the No. 1 court where Jonathan Brooklyn and Chas Okamoto lost to the Musketeer team of Jimmy Roebker and Mesa Mei. They trailed late but after breaking and then holding serve, they got back on track to even the game at 6-6. The XU tandem responded to win the next two and clinch the doubles point for the Musketeers. Spiker and David Schuster had given UH the lead after an 8-3 win at the No. 2 court, but Xavier evened the score when Michael Moe and Zach Mueck topped the UH pair of Dmytro Kovalyov and Danilo Casanova.
Hawai'i went up after two matches in singles play, as Spiker topped Mueck in straight sets at the three, and Nils Schuhmann did the same against Freddy Abunku on the No. 6 court. The Musketeers rallied with three straight wins though to capture the match. Adam Krull rallied to beat Casanova, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 with Mei defeating Kovalyov in three sets at the two.
Brooklyn rallied to top Roebker at first singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the last match to finish.
The Warriors next travel to Southern California for four matches. UH opens the trip in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Mar. 5 against Loyola Marymount then takes on UCLA one day later.
