HONOLULU – Scott Squier struck out a career-high nine batters, but the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team lost to No. 10 Rice, 2-0, in a 17-inning marathon game on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The game was the second longest in Rainbow baseball history, two innings short of the record set in 1978 (Oregon, 19 innings).

16 scoreless innings were played before the Owls (3-2) scored a pair of runs in the top of the 17th. Base hits by Austin Wobrock (1 H) and Pi'ikea Kitamura gave the 'Bows (0-5) life, but Adam Hurley (1 H) grounded out to second base to end the game.

Kitamura had a game-high three hits (3-7) for UH. Ford Stainback and Geoff Perrott both collected RBI in the 17th inning and led the Owls with two hits and one RBI each.

John Simms (2-0) got the win for Rice, working three scoreless innings and allowing just two hits. Patrick O'Rourke (0-1) was the pitcher of record for the 'Bows, tossing two innings and surrendering Rice's two runs.

Starter Scott Squier had arguably the best outing of his career. He fanned a career-high nine batters in seven scoreless innings of work. After Lawrence Chew pitched to three hitters in the eighth inning, Matt Cooper came on and tossed six and one-third scoreless innings of his own while allowing just one Owl hit.

The Rainbows outhit Rice 11-8 but stranded 17 baserunners.

The 'Bows came close to breaking the stalemate in the 12th inning when Stephen Ventimilia (0-1), who pinch ran for Andre Real (2-4), advanced to third with two outs. Marc Flores (0-5) ran the count to 2-2 but struck out to end the Rainbow threat.

Michael Ratterree (2-6, 1 R) led off the 17th inning with a double, and then later scored on Stainback's RBI-single up the middle. Perrott then doubled home Keenan Cook (1 R) from first base to complete the scoring.

The 'Bows and Owls continue their series Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
