LONG BEACH, Calif.--The No.65 University of Hawai`i women's tennis team (2-4, 2-2 Big West) fell to No. 43 Long Beach State, 4-3 this afternoon in Long Beach, Calif. It was the second 4-3 loss for the 'Bows in three matches on the road.
The 49ers swept the doubles matches in order. No. 1
Katarina Poljakova and
Xenia Suworowa lost to LBSU's Klaudia Malenosvka and Cantlay, 8-3. The No. 2 pairing of
Paulina Petriskova and
Rebecca Faltusz also fell by the score of 8-3 to Ebba Unden and Karolina Rozenberg while the third duo of
Martina Kostalova and
Kelsey Daguio dropped their match to Anne-Sophie Willems and Hazuki Onaga, 8-2.
In singles, LBSU took the opening three matches to seal the win with the No. 5 and No. 6 slots finishing first with Rozenberg defeating Daguio, 6-0, 6-2 and Willems besting Faltusz, 6-2, 6-2 respectively. The 49ers clinched the win when Cantlay held off Kostalove on the No. 3 court, 6-3, 7-5. But Hawai`i did not go down without a fight. Petriskova and Eva Rodriguez split their first two sets, 4-6 and 7-5 but it was Petriskova who prevailed 10-5 in a tie-breaker. Then, Poljakova won her third straight match, defeating Malenovska, 7-5, 6-4 and in the final match of the day, Suworowa battled back to win in a thrilling three set affair, 5-7, 7-5, 11-9.
Hawai`i completes their four-match roadtrip through SoCal on Feb. 19 against San Diego.
