LOS ANGELES, Calif. – For the second time in three matches this season, the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team outlasted UCLA in five sets. One night after getting swept in three, the 13
th-ranked Warriors defeated the sixth-ranked Bruins Saturday at Pauley Pavilion.

Set scores for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match were 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12.

With the win, the Warriors (5-8, 4-6 MPSF) snapped a nine-match road losing streak dating back to last season. The match was also UH's eighth five-set match through 13 matches, one shy of the school record for five set matches in a rally-scoring season.
UH will continue its four-match road trip with a pair of MPSF contests at top-ranked UC Irvine, Monday and Tuesday.

Hawai'i was led by its big three pin hitters –
JP Marks (18),
Brook Sedore (17), and
Sinisa Zarkovic (15) – who combined for 40 kills, six aces, and 10 blocks. Both Marks and Zarkovic hit over .400 for the match. In the three sets that the Warriors won, UH hit a staggering .600 with 40 kills and just four errors in 60 attempts.

Much like last month's Outrigger Invitational match in which the Warriors rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win in five, UH again needed to overcome a 2-1 hole to send the match to a deciding fifth set. In the fifth, the Warriors scored the first three points and never trailed in the set. With the Bruins inching to tie things up, Marks came up big with three straight kills and an ace during one stretch of Hawai'i points. And similar to the Outrigger finale, UCLA's Quiroga Gonzalo hit out to end the match.

Gonzalo had a match-high 21 kills for the Bruins (9-8, 5-6) while Robert Page added 17. UCLA, the league's top serving team, finished with only two aces – both by Gonzalo – and 18 service errors.

The Bruins scored the first five points of Set 1 before the Warriors rallied to tie the score at 12. UH took a brief 15-14 lead and surged ahead 20-18 until UCLA scored three straight to take a one point lead. The teams traded sided-outs until
JP Marks was stuffed by UCLA's Page and Spencer Rowe, giving the Bruins set point. On the next play, the tandem teamed up again to roof Sedore.

In Set 2, back-to-back kills by Marks and Sedore gave the Warriors a 15-11 kill. After a UCLA kill, the Warriors strung together three straight points for an 18-12 lead and the Bruins would not threaten the rest of the way. UH hit a blistering .789 with 15 kills no errors in 19 swings.

The Bruins was the first to 20 at 21-17 with a 7-2 run since the media timeout. Back-to-back kills by Marks and Sedore pulled the Warriors to within two but the Bruins answered by scoring the final four points, the latter by UH hitting errors, for the 25-19 victory.

The Warriors sent the match to a fifth set after rallying from a 20-18 deficit in Set 4. UH scored three straight points – by a Zarkovic kill, a
Taylor Averill and
Jace Olsen double block, and Bruin hitting error – for a 21-20 lead. Both teams traded points and that's when Marks took over, scoring UH's final three points with kills for a 25-23 victory.

On Friday, the Bruins defeated UH 26-24, 25-17, 25-23.
