Warrior Tennis Turned Back By No. 66 San Diego State

Box Score

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Warrior tennis team returned to the court after a three-week layoff but didn't have enough against No. 66 San Diego State, falling to the Aztecs, 5-2,  on Thursday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. UH drops to 2-3 while SDSU improves to 5-3.

The Aztecs grabbed the doubles point then moved ahead 2-0 after Jonathan Brooklyn fell to Derek Siddiqui in straight sets at one singles. Chas Okamoto won UH's first match of the afternoon to cut into the lead, beating Marvin Tawasi 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The Aztecs got closer to the win  though after Nils Schuhmann suffered a difficult loss at the six after going up a set, losing to Andranik Khachatryan, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Dmytro Kovalyov cruised by Thorsten Bertsch at the two, 6-2, 6-4, but SDSU won the deciding point when Juan Florez topped Danilo Casanova, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 at the five. The final match of the afternoon was decidedly the most competitive. At three singles, Jared Spiker went up a set, but would fall 8-6 in a third-set tiebreaker.

Hawai'i retakes the court Friday when it hosts Pacific in a Big West Conference contest at the UH Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
