IRVINE, Calif.—University of Hawai'i senior pitcher
Kaia Parnaby (Bilgola Plateau, NSW, Australia/NBSC Freshwater Senior Campus) tallied three wins and two saves in six appearances to help No. 23/25 Hawai`i go 5-1 at the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic and earn her first Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week honor.
Parnaby threw 31.2 innings while striking out 39 batters and walking three as the Rainbow Wahine defeated Ole Miss twice, UAB and Saint Mary's while splitting with No. 16 Washington. She blanked opposing teams for her first 27.1 innings pitched before giving up a pair of runs against Washington in her sixth appearance of the three-day tourney.
In her first three starts, she fired three complete-game shutouts. Against Ole Miss in the season opener, she posted a 2-0 win and flirted with a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The only hit she allowed was an infield single to third base. Parnaby finished the game with 11 strikeouts and faced just one batter over the minimum. In UH's second game on Thursday night, Parnaby fanned the first six batters she faced and finished with eight strikeouts in a three-inning relief appearance against UAB later that night that netted her the save in a 7-2 triumph against UAB.
After tossing a five-hit shutout against Saint Mary's on Friday, Parnaby picked up her second save of the tournament – another three-inning stint in a 5-2 win against the Huskies. On Saturday, Parnaby again took a no-hitter into the sixth in their second meeting with Ole Miss and ended up yielding just three hits in the 2-0 win over the Rebels.
Parnaby, who now has eight career saves, threw 31.2 of 42 innings for UH during the week.
It is her fourth overall conference Pitcher of the Week honor--she earned the award three times while the Rainbow Wahine were members of the Western Athletic Conference.
Hawai'i hits the road this week to play in UNLV's Easton Desert Classic, Feb. 14-17 facing BYU, No. 19 UCLA, San Jose State, No. 5 Oregon, Utah Valley and Nevada.
