HONOLULU – The 11-seeded University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team's season came to a close on Friday night with a straight-set loss to BYU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Set scores were 25-21, 25-17, 25-13.
Emily Hartong provided the offense for the 'Bows, ripping a match-high 17 kills to go along with eight digs.
Ali Longo equaled match-high honors in digs with 15 and
Nikki Taylor contributed seven kills. The defeat was also the worst home loss for the 'Bows in the rally scoring era.
The Cougars put down 24 blocks to UH's eight and were led by Whitney Young's eight stuffs. Alexa Gray had seven blocks of her own to go along with a team-high 13 kills.
Hartong got the 'Bows off to a good start in set one, belting seven kills in the set as the two teams went back and forth. UH trailed 12-10 before her five straight kills put the 'Bows ahead by two points. The Cougars returned from their timeout to take control of the set. Block assists by Kathryn LeCheminant (6 kills, 4 blks) and Tambre Haddock (11 kills, 11 digs) regained the lead for BYU, one they would not give up.
The remainder of the match belonged to BYU. Gray had a pair of kills and a block to help the Cougars to a 6-1 start in set two. The 'Bows recovered after calling a timeout, but a 5-0 spurt midway through paced BYU to the two-set lead. Hawai'i trailed early in set three and lost handily.
The 'Bows close the season at 25-5 while BYU (24-6) moves on to a matchup with USC in the Los Angeles Regional semifinal.
