Women's Hoops Falls in Opener at Arizona State, 84-44

TEMPE, Ariz.--The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team fell in their season opener on the road at Arizona State, 84-44 on Saturday night. The Rainbow Wahine were led by Ashleigh Karaitiana and Kamilah Jackson who scored 15 and 11 points respectively.

Karaitiana came off the bench to shoot 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free throw line to lead UH. She also had a team-high four steals to go with four rebounds, a and blocked shot. Jackson was 4-of-7 in field goals and 3-of-5 from the charity stripe. She led UH with six reboundsand had one assist in 23 minutes of action.

Hawai`i led early on 5-4 in the first four minutes, but then Arizona State went on a 10-to-0 run and never looked back. The Sun Devils shot 55.6% from the floor and worked well together on offense, racking up 22 assists to UH's four for the game. Hawai'i tallied a 30% in field goals and turned the ball over 26 times. ASU out-rebounded UH 38-to-30 but the 'Bows were tough in the paint, outscoring Arizona State, 28-to-26. 

The Rainbow Wahine were held to just 18 points and 23.1% shooting in the first half and went into the break trailing by 26. The Sun Devils came out in the second half and went on a 17-to-5 run that the 'Bows were unable to stem. Karaitiana tried to rally the team, scoring 11 of her 15 points in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the charging Sun Devils.  

Hawai`i is now 26-14 in season openers and under head coach Laura Beeman UH is 0-2 in openers. The Rainbow Wahine conclude their roadtrip on Sunday at Northern Arizona where they will take on the Lumberjacks at 3:00 p.m. in Flagstaff, Ariz.
