Women's Basketball Opens Season at Arizona State, Northern Arizona

Game Notes

TEMPE, Ariz.--The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (0-0, 0-0 Big West) opens the 2013-14 season on the road at Arizona State on Saturday, Nov. 9 and Northern Arizona on Sunday, Nov. 10. The Rainbow Wahine look to build upon the foundation that second year head coach Laura Beeman and her staff laid down last season when the 'Bows finished in a tie for second place in the Big West while advancing to the post-season for the first time in 10 seasons.

The Rainbow Wahine return nine letterwinners and welcome four newcomers to the 2013-14 squad. Leading UH into the season are All-Big West first team post-player Kamilah Jackson (formerly Martin)(15.1 ppg, 9.8 rpg); BWC Sixth Player of the Year Shawna-Lei Kuehu (8.4 ppg, 4.7 rpg); BWC Defensive Player of the Year Sydney Haydel (3.5 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 33 steals); and Ashleigh Karaitiana (8.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg) who made the Big West all-freshman team and earned honorable mention honors.

Last year, in head coach Laura Beeman's first season, she and her staff turned around the Hawai'i program. They led the upstart Rainbow Wahine to its first winning record since the 2006-07 season and propelled the team to a WNIT appearance. Hawai'i recorded a 17-14 overall record and finished in a two-way Big West Conference tie for second place with Cal Poly at 13-5—which included an 8-1 home conference record. It marked UH's best conference record in 12 seasons.

Last week, the shorthanded 'Bows took on sister school Hawai`i Hilo in an exhibition game. The 'Bows pulled away from the Vulcans in a 70-35 win at the Stan Sheriff Center. A quartet of Rainbow Wahine recorded double-digits in points led by Diane Moore who poured in 18 off the bench. Shawna-Lei Kuehu added 14 points, Ashleigh Karaitiana scored 13 and Kamilah Jackson chipped in 10 to lead the 'Bows to the win. Making their Rainbow Wahine debuts were junior transfer Morgan Mason who had a team-high six steals and seven points while freshman Angelina Smith chipped in four points off the bench.

Arizona State finished ninth in last year's PAC-12 standings with a 5-13 conference record. Overall, the Sun Devils posted a 13-18 record.
