WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team ended the season on a high note with a 2-0 win over Cal State Northridge Senior Day at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Tiana Fujimoto scored in the opening frame, while senior
Malé Fresquez added a goal early in the second half to lift UH to victory.
The Rainbow Wahine (8-8-1, 3-4-1 Big West) entered the day with an outside chance of qualifying for one of the four spots in the Big West Tournament. UH did its part by winning by a two-goal margin, but were knocked out of contention with UC Riverside's win at Long Beach State. Still, UH finished in a tie for fifth place after being picked seventh in the preseason poll and sent its senior class of Fresquez,
Bree Locquiao,
Karli Look,
McKenzie McGoldrick,
Chelsea Miyake and
Skye Shimabukuro out with a win.
Playing its first match in 10 days, UH got on the board in the 31st minute on a counter-attack. Shimabukuro fed Fujimoto a through ball and the junior did the rest, lifting a shot over CSUN goalkeeper Cynthia Tafoya to give the Rainbow Wahine a 1-0 lead. It was the team-leading 10th goal of the season for Fujimoto, who also tied a Natasha Kai's single-season record with a her seventh game-winning goal of the year.
The Rainbow Wahine scored again less than three minutes into the second half off a free kick.
Ashley Haruki flicked a pass to Frequez who hammered home a close-range shot in the box. It was the first goal of the season for the senior and second of her career.
The UH defense, meanwhile, held strong, as the Matadors (6-12-1, 1-6-1 BWC) were able to manage just four shots—and just one on goal—for the match. Freshman
Monk Berger notched her seventh shotout of the season, extending her single-season record.
With the win, the Rainbow Wahine ended a string of four straight losing seasons, finishing with an 8-8-1 overall mark.
