WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team's aspirations for the postseason took a serious blow with a 2-1 loss to UC Irvine Thursday night at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
UH fell in an early hole and couldn't recover in dropping to 7-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Big West. The Rainbow Wahine are in a tie for sixth place in points in the Big West and will need to win its final home match on Nov. 3, while also getting plenty of help to be one of the four teams to qualify for the Big West Tournament.
It was a wild opening to the match with three goals in the first 15 minutes. UC Irvine (9-6, 4-2 Big West) scored the first two goals, including one just two minutes into the match. Laura McGrail gathered a long ball from Jordan Bruce in the box for an easy score. The Anteaters stuck again just eight minutes later when the Rainbow Wahine failed to fully clear a corner kick with Bianca Frontino taking advantage with a beautiful finish through traffic from 10 yards out.
T.J. Reyno provided UH a much-needed spark off the bench in the 15 minute. Less than a minute after checking in, Reyno made a heads up play, stealing the ball from UCI goalkeeper Corey Tobin on the left side of the box, before slotting an open-net goal inside the far post. It was the first career goal for the freshman.
The Rainbow Wahine had a golden opportunity to equalize the match 10 minutes later but
Storm Kenui's shot in the box floated over the goal.
The second half went scoreless with little scoring chances for either team. The Rainbow Wahine played the final 30-plus minutes of the match a player down after freshman
Kama Pascua was issued a red card. UC Irvine ended the match with a 10-6 advantage in shots.
The Rainbow Wahine will host Cal State Northridge in its final home match of the year on Sunday, Nov. 3. Kickoff is set for noon at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium with UH's six seniors to be honored to following the conclusion of the match.
