WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second half before eventually falling to Cal Poly, 3-2, in a thrilling double-overtime match Sunday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Elise Krieghoff scored the golden goal with less than five minutes left in double-overtime to lift the Mustangs (7-7, 3-1 Big West) to a key road win. It was a rare home setback in league play for UH (6-7, 1-3 Big West) under head coach
Michele Nagamine. UH lost for just the second time in 10 league matches since 2011 with both of the losses coming in double-overtime.
UH held Cal Poly to limited opportunities in the first 50 minutes, but the Mustangs capitalized on a pair of situations to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Both goals came off the head of Megan Abutin who scored in the 34th minute, then again in the 47th minute.
The Rainbow Wahine responded just seven minutes after Cal Poly's second goal when
Tiana Fujimoto lobbed a beautiful shot over Mustang goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti. It was the junior's eighth goal of the season and fourth in the last six matches.
With time winding down the Rainbow Wahine got a dramatic goal with less than two minutes left in regulation on a sister combination.
Krystal Pascua send a diagonal ball to
Kama Pascua who rocketed home the equalizer to send the game into overtime.
Once in overtime, Kreighoff —the nation's leading scorer—settled the match. UH did a solid job of containing the sophomore forward for much of the match, holding her to just one shot in regulation. But a UH miscue led to a Cal Poly counter attack as Kacey Held was able to feed a streaking Krieghoff for her 16th goal of the season.
The Rainbow Wahine next head to the road for a pair of Big West matches at UC Davis (Thursday, Oct. 17, 2:00 p.m. PT) and Long Beach State (Sunday, Oct. 20, 6:00 p.m .PT).
