Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season with ‘Anuenue Invitational

VIDEO: Rainbow Wahine To Watch - X. Suworowa

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team will open their fall season with their annual UH 'Anuenue Invitational from Thursday, Oct. 3-Saturday, Oct. 5. The 'Bows will battle Hawai'i Pacific and a split squad from Chaminade in the three day tournament at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine return a solid core of six letterwinners from last year's team that was 6-12 overall and 4-4 in their first season in the Big West. Among the six returnees are senior captain Xenia Suworowa, who earned first team All-Big West honors last season in both singles and doubles with partner Katarina Poljakova who completed her eligibility last season. Also returning are senior Kelsey Daguio; juniors Rebecca Faltusz and Martina Kostalova; and sophomores Daisy Green and Paulina Petriskova.

Head coach Jun Hernandez has added three highly touted newcomers to this year's team. Sarah Gealer is a 5-2 sophomore transfer who played No. 2 and No. 3 singles as well as No. 2 and No. 3 doubles at Maryland last year as a freshman. The Los Angeles, Calif. native is a 2012 graduate of San Marino High School where she helped lead the Titans to four league titles and two Southern California CIF Championships. Hawai'i's two freshmen are Cindy Nguyen and Julia Weisel. Nguyen graduated last year from Milikan High School in Long Beach, Calif. where she captured the league's singles champion in both 2011 and 2012 and was named the Press Telegram Player of the year in both 2012 and 2013. Weisel is a 2013 graduate of Kihei Charter School on Maui who has national and international experience as a junior player. Locally in Hawai'i, was ranked No. 1 in 12's, 14's, 16's and 18's and she reached as high as No. 25 nationally in the 14's when she relocated to train in Florida. She has travelled extensively competing in several International Tennis Federation tournaments and last year spent the summer training and touring in France.
