HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Warrior tennis team opened the 2013 season on Wednesday, falling to No. 5 Duke, 7-0, at the UH Tennis Complex. Hawai'i falls to 0-1 while the Blue Devils improve to 1-0 with their season-opening win.
Duke took a one-point lead after sweeping doubles play.
Jonathan Brooklyn and
Dmytro Kovalyov faced a tall order against the nation's top-ranked doubles duo in
Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler, and fell to the Blue Devil tandem, 8-1. Brooklyn and Kovalyov had game point in four of the games, but only managed to win one of them.
The Warriors were outdone in singles play as well, but held their own against three Top 25 opponents. Second singles featured the most competitive match of the afternoon, as Brooklyn, UH's top singles player, fell to Fred Saba 7-5, 6-3.
Danilo Casanova also delivered a solid effort, but lost at five singles to
Raphael Hemmeler, 6-1, 6-4.
The Warriors retake the court this Saturday, Jan. 12 against No. 15 Baylor. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
