Women's Hoops Hosts Conference Home Opener Against UC Irvine

Game Notes

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (5-8, 1-1 Big West) returns to the Stan Sheriff Center to host their conference home opener against UC Irvine (5-9, 1-1 BWC) on Wednesday, Jan. 9.  UH concludes its two-game homestand on Sunday, Jan. 13 first with the 'Bows' annual Alumnae Game at 2:30 pm followed by Hawai'i vs. Long Beach State (9-5, 2-0 BWC).

The Rainbow Wahine split its Big West opening weekend, losing at Cal State Fullerton, 74-83 then bouncing back at UC Riverside, 65-50. It was a tale of two very different games. At CSUF, although the 'Bows scored the second-most points in the season, they also commited a season-high 24 turnovers as the defense struggled to contain the Titans. Junior forward Kamilah Martin tied her season-high pouring in 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting with eight rebounds. Against the Highlanders however, UH was able to counter UCI's high-scoring attack with a stifling defense that held their opponents to 17-points below their season average. In the game, UH committed just nine turnovers (second lowest amount this season) while outscoring the Highlanders in the paint, 32-to-20; off of turnovers 11-to-2; and off the bench 38-to-10. Shawna-Lei Kuehu was a difference maker both on offense and defense, as she scored a team-high 14 points with an assist, three rebounds and three steals.

UC Irvine comes to Honolulu with a 4-10 overall record and 0-2 mark in Big West action. The Anteaters fell twice last week at home to UC Santa Barbara (46-50) and Cal Poly (46-64). A pair of UCI players--Camille Buckley and Jennifer Tsurumoto--lead their team with 10.4 and 10.3 points per game respectively. Buckley has been strong in the post, shooting 51-for-105 for a .486 field goal percentage. She also leads the Anteaters with 7.5 rebounds per game as well as a .768 free-throw percentage. Tsurumoto has team-highs with 16 steals and 36 assists.

Honorary Captain: Former UH Rainbow Wahine head coach Vince Goo will serve as the first honorary captain for the Rainbow Wahine this season. Goo coached the Rainbow Wahine from 1987-2004 and is tied with Riley Wallace as UH's all-time winningest basketball coach with a record of 334-166 (.669). Goo led his teams to three conference titles (two in the Big West and one in the Western Athletic Conference) and advanced to the post-season 10 times (five NCAA tournament and five WNIT appearances). Goo was voted Big West Coach of the Year three times (1988-89, 1992-93, and 1993-94).
