Women's Basketball Battles Cal Poly for Shot at Conference Lead

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (8-9, 4-2 BWC) return home to host a pair of conference games against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara this week at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
Currently, UH is in a two-way tie for third with a 4-2 conference record with Cal State Northridge, just a half game behind league leaders Pacific and Cal Poly who are at 4-1. UCSB is in a tie for seventh in the Big West with a 2-3 mark.
 
Junior forward Kamilah Martin continues to lead Hawai'i both overall and in conference. Through 17 games, Martin is averaging a career-high 16.1 points to go with her team-high 9.5 rebounds per game. She also has a team-high 20 steals and is second on the team with 29 assists. In UH's last game at UC Davis, Martin eclipsed the 1,000 point mark to becoming just the 17th Rainbow Wahine to do so, and just the sixth to accomplish the feat in just three seasons. She also moved into second place in UH history past Tanya Smith (2004-08) in offensive rebounds with four against UCD. She now has 306 for second place alone after entering the game tied with Smith at 302. UH's all-time leading offensive rebounder is All-American Judy Mosely who secured 603 O-boards in her career. Martin is also just five rebounds away from tying Smith for third place in total rebounds at 816. After Martin's eight at UCD, she is at 811.
 
Even though other teams have keyed on her, Martin has upped her game in conference, averaging 17.8 points per game and has made 33-of-40 free throws for a team-best .825 free throw percentage. She also has eight assists and eight steals with 8.3 rebounds per outing.
 
Rookie guard Ashleigh Karaitiana has been a match-up problem for defenses, and she is now averaging 9.4 points overall and 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in conference with eight steals and 13 assists. Coming on strong is Shawna-Lei Kuehu who is also averaging 10.5 points in conference. In Big West games, Kuehu has a team-high nine steals and is tied with Kalei Adolpho with four blocked shots. After playing in the season opener at San Francisco, Kuehu missed six games due to a concussion suffered at USF. Overall she is third on the team with 6.9 points with 3.9 rebounds per game with 12 steals and a team-high nine blocks.
 
About the Cal Poly Mustangs (10-6, 4-1 BWC)
After dropping their conference opener at Long Beach State, Cal Poly started their current four game win streak—including a triple-overtime win over Pacific two weeks ago. Last week, the Mustangs had just one game which was a victory over UC Santa Barbara, 66-47 in San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly is 7-3 at home and 3-3 in road games this season.
 
The Mustangs have three players averaging over 10 points per game—led by Ariana Elegado who has a team-high 12.6 points and 24 steals per game and is third on the team with 49 assists. She also leads Cal Poly with 36 3-pointers made with a .396 3-pt field goal percentage. Molly Schlemer and Brittany Woodard are both tied with 10.6 points per game and are averaging 5.9 and 5.6 rebounds respectively. Kayla Griffin and Jonae Ervin both have over 50 assists each.
 
Earlier this season, Cal Poly head coach Faith Mimnaugh picked up her 200 career win at with the team's 72-63 win at Nevada. She is already has the most wins as a coach in Mustang history, amassing 205 wins to 241 losses to this point in 15-plus seasons.

Series History: Hawai'i is winless against Cal Poly with a series record of 0-3. The last game was a six-point loss in San Luis Obispo, 73-79 on Nov. 18, 1982.
Honorary Captains: Dennis Agena and Mike Taylor will serve as honorary captains for Thursday's game for their contributions to youth basketball in the state of Hawai'i.
