HONOLULU –The University of Hawai`i sailing team finished runner-up at the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite held Jan. 19-20, at Keehi Lagoon. Salve Regina, out of Rhode Island, beat out 13 other squads to capture the annual regatta.
Fourteen races in each the A and B divisions were completed during the two-day event, named after former Rainbow sailor Peter Wenner, who tragically lost his life in a recreational boating accident in November 2008. Host Hawai`i fielded three teams in all, including two coed and one women's team. The women's team and coed “Green” squad each finished with 123 points, 20 points off the pace, with the women's team placing second following a tie-breaker. The Rainbow “Black” squad finished in sixth place.
The Rainbow Wahine next race at the South Florida Intersectional, Feb. 16-17, while the coed team will compete in the McIntyre Team Race, March 2-3 in Redwood City, Calif.
