Warriors Beat Sacramento State For Second Straight Win

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Warrior tennis team won its second straight match, beating Sacramento State, 5-2, on Sunday at the UH Tennis Complex. UH improves to 2-2 on the season while the Hornets, last season's Big Sky Conference champions, fall to 1-3.
 
Hawai'i won its first doubles point of the season. Jared Spiker and Danilo Casanova teamed up at the two to top Sean Kolar and Tom Miller, 8-5. The Warriors earned the point when Chas Okamoto and David Shuster won at the three, 8-4.
 
Singles play saw Chas Okamoto secure the fifth and decisive point when he topped Roy Brandys 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. The Hornets trailed 2-0 but got back into the match when Niranjan Ram beat David Schuster at the six, 6-1, 6-3, but the next two finishes went to the Warriors as they won going away. With the result in hand, Dmytro Kovalyov won a third set tiebreaker at the two, and Jonathan Brooklyn was swept at the one but lost both sets also via tiebreaker.
 
The Warriors close the January portion of their schedule and won't retake the court until Feb. 20 when they host Pacific in their second Big West Conference match of the season.
