HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team will look to notch its first win when the Warriors host UC Irvine and Sacramento State this weekend at the UH Tennis Complex. UH will play UCI on Friday, Jan. 18 at 2:00 p.m. for its Big West Conference opener, then host the Hornets on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 9:00 a.m.
The Warriors opened the season with losses against two of the nation's top teams in Duke and Baylor. They were blanked by the No. 5 Blue Devils and lost to No. 15 Baylor, 6-1. Newcomer Nils Shuhmann won in straight sets at six singles to tally UH's lone win.
The matches will be the season opener for both UC Irvine and Sacramento State, with UH already having two matches under its belt. UCI comes in with 14 Big West titles to its credit.
Despite the pair of losses, several players displayed strong early-season performances. Against Duke,
Jonathan Brooklyn dropped a tough first set loss to No.23 Fred Saba before falling 7-5, 6-3, and
Danilo Casanova went three sets in his loss at fifth singles versus Baylor.
