Game Notes
HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (6-8, 2-1 Big West) battles Long Beach State (9-6, 2-1 BWC) on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 5:00 pm. The game will follow the 'Bows' annual Alumnae Game which will start at 2:30 pm at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Honorary Captain for the game will be UH All-American Nani Cockett, who will be representing all of the Rainbow Wahine alumnae. There will also be an autograph session after the UH vs. LBSU game.
After splitting their Big West opening roadtrip, the Rainbow Wahine kept the winning momentum by grinding out a 56-46 win over UC Irvine this past Wednesday at home. Rookie guard
Ashleigh Karaitiana poured in a game-high 16 points which also tied her season-high. Karaitiana was 8-of-15 from the floor with most of her points coming off of layups as she cut to the basket. She also contributed two rebounds, two assists, and a career-high three steals. Her 16 points tied her career-high that she scored against Arkansas (Nov. 24).
Hawai`i led the game from start to finish with UC Irvine (4-11, 0-3 Big West) tying the score just twice early in the first half. As a team, UH edged out the Anteaters in rebounds (39-to-36) and outscored UCI 32-to-20 in points in the paint and 17-to-13 in points off of turnovers. Hawai`i's reserves outscored their opponents, 23-to-21. All 11 UH players who saw action on the court scored at least two points in the game. The Rainbow Wahine shot 41.8% for the game from the floor—including 54.5% in the second half to hold UC Irvine at bay. UH's defense then closed ranks on the Anteaters in the second half, allowing them to shoot just 26.9% in field goals and 29.1% for the game.
Overall, junior forward Kamilah Martin continues to lead UH with averages just shy of a double-double. She has averaged 15.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game and leads UH with 26 assists and 17 steals. Martin also leads the team playing 31.9 minutes, a .507 field-goal percentage, and has made more free throws than any of her teammates have attempted (62-for-90). She is now just 61 points away from becoming just the 17th Rainbow Wahine to achieve the 1,000 point benchmark and is currently No. 4 all-time in career rebounds for UH.
Game's Honorary Captain
UH All-American Nani Cockett will be the game's Honorary Captain and will represent all of the alumnae as the captain. She, along with at least 20 other alums will participate in the program's annual Alumane Game which preceeds the UH vs. LBSU game at 2:30 pm on Sunday.
Cockett played for Hawai`i from 1994-98 and helped lead the 'Bows to three NCAA tournament appearances as well as a Big West and a WAC title. Cockett is No. 2 all-time in UH history with 1,866 points; 648 field goals; 128-pointers made; and 3-pt field goal percentage in 120 games.
