HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team got off to a quick start but faded down the stretch in a five-set loss to 10
th-ranked Ohio State Thursday, on the first day of the 19
th Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12.
The Warriors (0-3) lost to the Buckeyes for the first time and OSU (2-0) snapped a six-match tournament losing streak.
Sophomore opposite
JP Marks led the Warriors with 19 kills while
Sinisa Zarkovic added 12 and
Jace Olsen chipped in with 11. As a team, the Warriors hit .248 for the match and recorded six aces.
Andrew Lutz had a match-high 20 kills for the Buckeyes, who hit .328 and tallied nine total blocks and eight aces. Michael Henchy added 17 kills and Chen Levitan had 16.
UH got off to a fast start in the opening set forcing OSU to call timeout trailing 5-1. The Warriors held a lead until the Buckeyes tied the score at 16. UH reeled off two straight for a 19-17 advantage and sided-out to close out the set at 25-21 on Marks' sixth kill.
OSU took an early lead in Set 2, until UH fought back to tie it at 18. The Warriors tied it again at 20 and 22. After a
Johann Timmer service error, Zarkovic was stuffed giving the Buckeyes set point. Henchy's kill ended it tying the match at one set a piece.
The Warriors caught fire early in Set 3, taking an 11-6 lead with six kills in their first seven swings. UH extended its lead to 19-13 and cruised to a 25-20 victory. But in Set 4, the Buckeyes got the early advantage scoring five straight for a 16-10 lead en route to a 25-17 win.
In the deciding fifth set, the Buckeyes jumped out to a 6-2 lead with three straight kills and led 11-5 after back-to-back kills by Lutz and Levitan. UH erased two match points to pull within 14-12 before OSU ended it with a kill by Peter Heinen.
In the day's first match, two-time defending champion UCLA rallied for a 19-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 15-10 victory over Penn State. Robart Page led the Bruins (4-1) with 17 kills while Dane Worley and Kene Izuchukwu each added 13. Aaron Russell had a team-high 12 kills for the Nittany Lions (0-1).
The tournament continues on Friday with the UCLA and Ohio State at 4:00 p.m. followed by UH and seventh-ranked Penn State at 7:00 p.m.
