CHENEY, Wash. – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team dropped its second straight road match with a 2-1 loss to Eastern Washington Sunday afternoon at the EWU Sports and Recreation Center Soccer Field. UH fell to 5-3-2 with the loss.
Two days following a 2-0 loss at Washington State that snapped UH's seven-match unbeaten streak, Hawai'i fell again as Eastern Washington found the back of the net in each half. It marked the first time this year that the Rainbow Wahine have dropped back-to-back matches.
The Rainbow Wahine, who entered the weekend leading the Big West in scoring, out-shot the Eagles, 16-14, but were unable to score until late in the match while facing a two-goal deficit.
Eastern Washington (3-4-1), meanwhile, picked up its third straight win. Danielle Jones got the Eagles on the board first in the 38
th minute with her first goal of the season. Cassie Black added another EWU goal less than five minutes into the second half to give EWU a two-goal cushion.
After falling behind, 2-0, UH rallied late in the match. A
Tiana Fujimoto shot bounced off the crossbar in the 82
nd minute, but the Rainbow Wahine finally broke through in the 84
th minute when senior midfielder
Christy Watanabe netted her second goal of the season off an assist by
Chelsea Miyake.
It was Watanabe's second goal in the last three matches, however, it was too-little, too-late for the Rainbow Wahine who dropped its third road match this season and are now just 2-15 in its last 17 matches on the mainland.
Senior goalkeeper
Kanani Taaca set a season-high with eight saves in the loss.
The Rainbow Wahine next return home to host its annual Alumnae Match on Sunday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
