LAS VEGAS – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a wild 5-4 win over UNLV Sunday night at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Five different players scored for UH as the Rainbow Wahine (1-1) picked up a rare road win.
Two days after a season-opening 2-0 shutout loss at Nevada, the Rainbow Wahine bounced back in a big way, exploding for five goals—two in the first half and three in the second. It was the highest output by a UH team in a mainland match since a 5-0 win over San Francisco in 2008.
Scoring for the Rainbow Wahine were
Tiana Fujimoto,
Addison Carroll,
Krystal Pascua Chelsea Miyake and
Michelle Nakasone. It marked the first career goals for Carroll, a freshman midfielder, Miyake, a junior defender and Nakasone, a senior midfielder. That helped UH, losers of nine of its 10 away matches last year, pick up a road win in just its second try in 2012.
UH went up twice in the match only to see the Rebels (1-1) equalize each time. UH got on the board first on a Fujimoto goal in the 17
th minute but the Rebels answered just 15 seconds later. Carroll's scoring strike five minutes before halftime gave the Rainbow Wahine a 2-1 lead at the break. But again UNLV answered, making it, 2-2, three minutes into the second half.
UH then erupted for three unanswered goals—the last coming off the foot of Nakasone in the 72
nd minute—to stake a comfortable 5-2 lead. Despite the deficit, the Rebels still wouldn't going away, scoring a pair of goals in a two-minute span to make it 5-4 match. However, the Rainbow Wahine kept their composure and held off the Rebels in the final 16-plus minutes to nab the win.
The Rainbow Wahine now return home to host the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka `Oi, Aug. 22, 24 & 26 at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH will face Sacred Heart in its home opener on Friday, Aug. 24 at 7:00 p.m.
