Two UH Athletes Place In Top Five At WAC Heptathlon

Heptathlon Final Results

MOSCOW, Idaho – University of Hawai'i junior Samantha Balentine and sophomore Amanda Alvarez finished third and fifth, respectively in the heptathlon at the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday at the Dan O'Brien Complex.

Both set personal bests in the event and helped UH score 10 team points, which puts them second behind New Mexico State (13) in the team standings. NMSU's Zoe Meade won the event with 5,109 points.

Balentine, of Lodi, Calif., eclipsed 5,000 points for the first time in her career and finished with 5,015, which was 108 points better than her previous best. She posted PRs in three events, including in the long jump in which she leaped 18-5.75 (5.63m), third best among the 10 competitors. Balentine also placed second in the javelin (103-8/31.61m) and third in the 800-meters (2:33.97).

Competing in just her second career heptathlon, Alvarez posted a career-best 4,306 points. The Vancouver, Wash., native posted the day's second-best long jump (18-6/5.64m); placed eighth in the javelin (70-11/21.63m); and seventh in the 800-meters (2:40.22).
