Heptathlon Day 1 Results
MOSCOW, Idaho – University of Hawai'i junior
Samantha Balentine is currently in second place after the first day of the heptathlon at the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Tuesday at the Dan O'Brien Complex.
The Lodi, Calif., native scored a personal best Day 1 total of 3,126 points, which was 109 points better than her previous best. She started the day with a PR in the 100-meter hurdles (14.65) and followed with a first place finish in the high jump (5-8.75/1.75m). Balentine threw 34-0.75 (10.38m) in the shot put and concluded the day with a time of 26.34 seconds in the 200-meters.
New Mexico State sophomore Zoe Meade leads the event with 3,171 points. Also competing in the heptathlon for the Rainbow Wahine are
Amanda Alvarez and
Kaleigh Morrison, who are fifth and ninth, respectively.
Alvarez also posted a career-best Day 1 score with 2,676 points. The Vancouver, Wash., native had PRs in the high jump (5-0.5/1.54m) and shot put (27-3.75/8.32m). She also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (15.25) and fifth in the 200-meters (26.34).
Suffering from a back injury, Morrison still managed a pair of PRs in the 100-meter hurdles (15.50) and 200-meters (27.53). She placed third in the high jump (5-1.75/1.57m) and heaved the shot 27-9.25 (8.46m).
The heptathlon concludes Wednesday with the final three disciplines.
