MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team completed the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a fifth place finish after picking up six more medals Friday at the Dan O'Brien Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine tied their highest finish at the WAC Outdoor Championships while setting a new school record with 111.5 points and 10 total medals. The previous record was 105.5 points set by the 2009 squad, which also tallied nine total medals.
Utah State snapped Louisiana Tech's stranglehold of the WAC Championship by winning the team title with 148.5 points followed by host Idaho (133.5), Louisiana Tech (129), Fresno State (115), UH, New Mexico State (102), and Nevada (76.5).
Senior
TeRina Keenan captured her third consecutive discus title with a personal best throw of 179-2 (54.60m). The Auckland, New Zealand native, added a gold to the silver in the shot put which she won on Thursday. For her career, Keenan has five career WAC medals.
Senior
Emma MacCorquodale started the day with another bronze medal in the hammer throw after a personal best throw of 188-11 (57.58m). It marked the third straight year the Nanaimo, British Columbia native captured bronze in the event.
UH picked up two more medals in the triple jump as
Madara Apine and
Amanda Alvarez took gold and bronze, respectively. Apine, a senior from Ikskile, Latvia, leaped 41-1.5 (12.53m) and won her second WAC gold of the season to match her win at the Indoor Championships. Alvarez, a sophomore from Vancouver, Wash., who placed fifth in the pentathlon two days ago, posted a mark of 40-3.25 (12.27m).
Ashley Aitken won bronze in the 1500-meter run, clocking in at 4:35.19. Aitken, a senior from Napier, New Zealand, captured silver in the same event at last year's championships.
Freshman
Zhane Santiago led the UH contingent in the 100-meter hurdles with a bronze medal finish. A record three Rainbow Wahine competed in the event led by Santiago's time of 14.28 seconds. Junior
Samantha Esperanza placed fifth (14.51) while junior
Samantha Balentine was seventh (14.67).
In the high jump competition, a Rainbow Wahine failed to win the event for the first time in seven years. Defending champion and reigning WAC indoor silver medalist
Sarah Saddleton won silver with a season-best mark 5-8 (1.73m), which will likely qualify her for regionals while Balentine pulled out of the event needing to compete in the 100-hurdle finals. Still she finished fifth with a clearance of 5-5.75 (1.67m).
Next up for the Rainbow Wahine is the NCAA West Preliminary Round. UH will await word on which athletes will qualify for the event.
