No. 55 Women's Tennis Sweeps San Jose State on Senior Day

HONOLULU—The No. 55 University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (11-6, 2-1 WAC) won its fifth straight match with a sweep over San Jose State (12-4, 2-1 WAC), 7-0 on Senior Day at the UH Tennis Complex on Sunday morning. Seniors Barbara Pinterova and Aglae Van den Bergh helped lead UH to the win which snapped the Spartans 12-match win streak.
 
The Rainbow Wahine dominated the doubles competion to capture the first point of the day. Hawai'i's No. 1 duo of Pinterova and Jamie Pawid and No. 3 pair of Van den Berg and Martina Kostalova both won their matches, 8-1, while Katarina Poljakova and Xenia Suworowa defeated Chau Troung and Alexis Marquez, 8-3.
 
The 'Bows continued to roll in the singles competition. No. 2 Poljakova finished her match first, by winning her fifth-straight match with a 6-2, 6-1 over Truong while Suworowa won the No. 5 match over Isadora Busch, 6-2, 6-2. Pawid also won her fifth straight match at the No. 3 slot over Medlin, 6-1, 6-2. Kostalova defeated Willett, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 4 match while Kelsey Daguio held off Marquez, 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 6 slot. Senior Pinterova and San Jose State's Leon Chao paired off in the longest match of the day, with Pinterova coming out on top. The two split the first two sets with Pinterova winning the first set, 6-2 but Leon Chao fighting back to win 6-2 in the second. Pinterova then jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the deciding tie-breaker, but Leon Chao battled back and closed to 8-7 and then later 9-8 before Pinterova was able to close out the match with a 10-8 win in the tie-break. It was Pinterova's fourth straight win. 
 
Today's match concluded an 11-match homestand as well as the home schedule for the Rainbow Wahine. UH finishes its regular season on the road at Nevada on April 22 at 11:00 a.m. and will stay on the road for the WAC Championships held at New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M. (April 26-28).
