LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team swept Utah State on Friday in the first round of the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Tournament at the NMSU Tennis Center. This was the second meeting between the Warriors and Aggies this season, with UH (7-11) sweeping USU (5-14) in both contests.
The third-seeded Warriors took a 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point.
Chas Okamoto and
Charlie Rice defeated the brothers of Lenny Whiting and Andrew Whiting, 8-5, in two doubles for the first win.
Nils Schuhmann and
Danilo Casanova were in a heated battle on the No. 3 court when Jonathon Brooklyn and
Dmytro Kovalyov clinched the point with an 8-3 at the one over Sven Poslusny and Fredrik Peterson.
With the lead in UH's hands going into singles play, Okamoto kickstarted the sweep by beating Lenny Whiting, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 3 court.
Jared Spiker put the Warriors up 3-0 on the No. 5 court with a victory against Brandon Nielson, 6-3, 6-1. With the match win in sight, Kovalyov finished USU's season with a solid victory over Nate Ballam, 6-3, 6-1, at the two.
The Warriors advance to the semifinals to face Idaho on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. MT (9:00 a.m. HT).
