Men’s Tennis Shoots For WAC Title

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team takes aim at its fourth Western Athletic Conference title five seasons when it heads to Las Cruces, N.M. for the 2012 WAC Tournament, April 27-29, at the NMSU Tennis Center. The tournament is being hosted by New Mexico State.

The Warriors (6-11, 3-2 WAC) head into the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will play sixth-seeded Utah State (5-13, 0-4 WAC) on Friday, April 27 at 12:00 p.m. MT (8:00 a.m. HT). The winner will take on No. 2 seed (13-13, 3-2 WAC).

The meeting with USU will be a rematch of sorts, as the Warriors topped the Aggies in their regular season finale. UH won all three doubles matches and captured five matches in singles action. Jonathan Brooklyn topped Sven Poslusny on the No. 1 court in the only three-set match, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.

Dmytro Kovalyov is riding a three-match win streak and is 6-2 overall in singles heading into the tournament. UH's top duo of Brooklyn and Kovalyov have a 6-4 overall doubles record, most recently topping Utah State's pair of Poslusny and Marcus Fritz.

On the Aggie front, Poslusny, the No. 1 court singles player, is 8-10 this season but riding a two-match win streak. Fritz won his last two singles matches, going 6-6 overall in the No. 2 court and 1-1 in the No. 3 court. Poslusny and Fritz are the top pair for USU at 6-9 this season.
