AZUSA, Calif. – University of Hawai'i junior heptathlete
Samantha Balentine is in fourth place after the first day of the California Invitational Wednesday at Cougar Stadium on the campus of Azusa Pacific University.
The junior from Lodi, Calif., set a personal-best with 3,017 points on the strength of a pair of lifetime bests in the 100-meter hurdles (14.90) and 200-meter dash (26.90), the first and last events of the day. In fact, her hurdles time is the fifth-best mark all-time in school history. Balentine also tied for the second best high jump (5-7.75/1.72m) and threw 34-5.75 (10.51m) in the shot put.
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine among the 33-athlete field were sophomores
Amanda Alvarez and
Kaleigh Morrison. Competing in her first-ever heptathlon was Alvarez who is in 27
th place with 2,590 points. Morrison suffered an injury during the high jump and gutted out 2,549 points for 29
th place.
Alvarez, of Vancouver, Wash., placed 19
th in the 100-meter hurdles (15.21), tied for 28
th in the high jump (4-10.25/1.48m), 33
rd in the shot put (25-3.25/7.70m), and 14
th in the 200-meters (26.00).
Morrison, of Tigard, Ore., 25
th in the 100-meter hurdles (15.74), tied for eighth in the high jump (5-4.25/1.63m), 31
st in the shot put (26-11.25/8.21m), and 32
nd in the 200-meters (28.15).
The heptathlon concludes on Wednesday with the final three disciplines.
