SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – University of Hawai'i men's golfer
T.J. Kua shot a final round 69 to finish in a tie for 14
th place at the 66
th Western Intercollegiate, Sunday at the Pasatiempo Golf Club.
Kua finished the two-day tournament with a three-round score of 5-over 215 (73-73-69). He finished in a three-way tie for 14
th, which included the No. 1-ranked player in the country, Texas' Dylan Frittelli. Kua posted his fifth Top 25 finish in nine competitions this season.
The tournament featured 26 golfers ranked among the Top 100, of which Kua finished ahead of 14 of them, including two ranked in the Top 15. Stanford's Patrick Rodgers, the third-ranked golfer nationally, took home titlist honors at 4-under 206.
The field also included seven teams ranked in the Top 14 nationally. Top-ranked Texas won the title with a score of 1060, four strokes ahead of No. 14 Stanford. UH placed 11
th among the 14-team field at 1136.
Junior
Cory Oride continued his steady play finishing in a tie for 17
th – his third Top 25 finish of the season – at 6-over 216 (71-73-72). Oride posted 10 birdies during the tournament, which tied for seventh-most among all competitors.
Sophomore Nainoa shot a final round 74, which included one of only eight eagles in the tournament, to finish in a tie for 62
nd at 231 (81-76-74). Also competing for the Warriors were junior
Henry Park (76-77-82=235/t72nd), freshman
Brian Lee (81-85-79=245/t83
rd), and junior Alexander Chu (88-79-87=254/88
th).
The Warriors will next compete in the Western Athletic Conference Championships, April 30-May 1 at the Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.
