LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team responded from a road opening defeat to down host UNLV, 5-2, on Tuesday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Warriors improve to 5-10 while the Rebels drop to 7-13.
The UH pair of
Jonathan Brooklyn and
Dmytro Kovalyov won the third of three close double matches to grab the doubles point for Hawai'i. At the one flight, they topped Bernard Schoeman and Brian Kenyon, 8-6, two results after
Charlie Rice and
Chas Okamoto beat Rene Ruegamer and Alex Bell at the three to open the match.
The Warriors dominated singles play. Kovalyov and
Nils Schuhmann won at the three and four, respectively, to push the lead to 3-1. Kovalyov won his second match of the day with his 6-4, 6-2 victory over Brian Kenyon, and Schuhmann topped Alex Bull, 6-0, 6-3.
The Rebels attempted a rally with a win at six singles, but
Jared Spiker topped Johannes Markel, 7-6, 6-1, to clinch the win for UH.
The Warriors end their two-match stay in Las Vegas, Nev. and now travel to Logan, Utah to play a pair of Western Athletic Conference matches against Idaho and host Utah State. The matches will be the final regular season contests for the Warriors, as they hope to improve on their 2-1 WAC record.
