Tournament Bracket
LAS VEGAS – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team heads to Las Vegas for the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Tournament this week at the Orleans Arena. The Rainbow Warriors will tip-off the tournament against Idaho in a quarterfinal match-up on Thursday, March 8 at 12:00 p.m. PT (10:00 a.m. HT).
UH (15-15, 6-8 WAC) is on a season-long five-game losing skid, including four straight conference losses that dropped the 'Bows into a tie for fifth-place in its final WAC regular-season. The Rainbow Warriors were relegated to the No. 6 seed and will now face the No. 3 seed Vandals (18-12, 9-5 WAC) for the second time in a week. Idaho defeated UH handily, 82-63, in Honolulu, on March 1 and come into the tournament having won seven of its last eight contests.
If UH is going to make a run in the tournament, they'll look to the trio of
Vander Joaquim,
Zane Johnson and
Joston Thomas. Each player is averaging 14.0 ppg with Joaquim (first team, all-defensive) and Johnson (honorable mention) each earning all-WAC honors. Thomas meanwhile, was the team's top scorer in WAC play (16.9 ppg).
This will UH's final WAC Tournament before joining the Big West next season. The Rainbow Warriors have won the tournament three times (1994, 2000, '01) but recent history has not been kind as UH has not won a tournament game since 2005, dropping six straight games in that span.
