HONOLULU—The No. 22 University of Hawai`i softball team extended its record start to its season to 17-0 after sweeping Sunday's doubleheader to capture the Bank of Hawaii Invitational. UH defeated Radford in their opener, 5-1 and later shut out No. 20 Florida State, 1-0 in the tourney's championship game. The No. 22 and No. 1 Seed Rainbow Wahine defeated Radford, 5-1 in their opening game on Sunday against No. 4 seed Radford. Parnaby posted a complete game victory giving up one run on three hits with one walk and eight strike outs.

The 'Bows jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Kelly Majam was hit by a pitch to start the frame and Kayla Wartner followed with a single to left, but on the play the leftfielder's throw back into the infield went awry allowing both runners to move into scoring position. Radford then lifted their starter Jackie Jenkins for Stephanie Dameron who got the first batter she faced to ground out to third. But the next batter, Jessica Iwata, ripped a single down the third baseline to drive in both Majam and Wartner. Later, Iwata came around to score on an RBI single to left by Leisha Li`ili`i to give UH an early 3-0 lead.

Hawai`i increased its lead to 5-0 in the third inning on a bases clearing, two-run double by Li`ili`i. The shot was laced down the first baseline to drive in both Alex Aguirre and Sharla Kliebenstein from second and first base respectively.

Radford got one run back in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by designated player Micalah Sacre.

With the win, UH advanced to the championship game against No. 20 Florida State. The Seminoles overwhelmed UC Santa Barbara, 13-4 in the No. 2 vs. No. 3 game in the morning.

The game between the Rainbow Wahine and the Seminoles was a pitcher's duel between UH ace Stephanie Ricketts fired 7.0 innings, allowing just the one hit in the second inning while forcing four fly-outs and six ground outs. Ricketts walked four and struck out 11 to raise her record to 10-0.

Florida State's Monica Perry had a solid game as well. After giving up the one run in the second inning, she retired the next 10 batters in a row before Sarah Robinson got a hit through the leftside of the infield. Perry threw 6.0 innings, spacing two hits with two walks and a career-high 13 strike outs. She faced just two batters over the minimum.
The 'Bows were able to load the bases with one out in the first inning on a strike out swinging passed ball and two walks. But Perry was able to strike out the side to thwart the UH rally.

In the top of the second, it was Florida State's turn to load the bases. After a strike out, Erika Leonard drew a walk and hustled to third on a single to right by Maddie O'Brien. A walk issued to Kelly Hensley loaded the bases. But the following batter, Amber Bryant hit a grounder to Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu at first base. Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu ran up the line to tag Bryant and then tossed to Kayla Wartner behind the plate who applied the double-play tag on Leonard who was trying to score.

In the second inning, Hawai`i was able to breakthrough on the scoreboard posting what would turn out to be the game's only run. Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu drilled a double down the leftfield line. The next batter, Dara Pagaduan struck out swinging with the ball in the dirt. On the play, Pagaduan ran the play out at first and was safe due to an errant throw by the catcher that allowed pinch runner Jazmine Zamora to race around the bases to score the run.

Hawai`i's 17-straight wins is one victory shy of tying the program record streak of 18 set in 2010.

The Rainbow Wahine will battle the Seminoles again in a single game on Tuesday, March 6 at the RWSS.
