Men’s Tennis Dominates UC Davis On Senior Day, 6-1

HONOLULU – With a thrilling doubles result and dominant singles play in its home finale, the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team shut down UC Davis, 6-1, on Friday at the UH Tennis Complex. Following the match, senior Charlie Rice was honored for his contribution to Rainbow Warrior men's tennis.

Hawai'i (4-9) won the doubles point in thrilling fashion. The UH pair of Jonathan Brooklyn and Dmytro Kovalyov opened doubles play with a solid 8-3 win in one doubles over Kyle Miller and Hugo Verdi-Fortin. The Aggies (3-10) responded with an 8-5 win at the three, as Danilo Casanova and David Schuster fell to Chris Aria and Alec Haley.

The 'Bows then seized the point at second doubles when the tandem of Carter Lam and Jared Spiker took down Toki Sherbakov and Josh Albert,  9-8(6). Lam and Spiker faced triple match point in the tiebreaker before reeling off five straight points to win and give UH the lead heading into singles play.

With momentum on its side, UH won the first three singles results to capture the match. Three decisive wins by Spiker at the five, Chas Okamoto at the two, then Kovalyov at the three were all the 'Bows needed. No. 99 Brooklyn topped Sherbakov at one singles to run his overall win streak to seven, spanning two weeks and three matches.

UH Head John Nelson coached at UC Davis from 1988-94, guiding the Aggies to an NCAA Division II national title in 1992.

Hawai'i takes to the road again, this time to finish the regular season. The 'Bows travel to Las Vegas to play New Mexico and UNLV before finishing the trip with a pair of Western Athletic Conference matches against Idaho and Utah State.
