FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's team remained undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play, topping New Mexico State, 4-3, on Thursday at the Spalding G. Walthen Tennis Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 2-0 in the WAC.
Jonathan Brooklyn and WAC Athlete of the Week Dymtro Kovalyov both won their singles matches and teamed up to win at one doubles. Their 8-5 defeat of Matej Stakne and Luis Ramirez, coupled with
Danilo Casanova and
David Schuster's handling of Germain Degardin and Patrick Pfister (8-2), secured the doubles point for UH.
Charlie Rice and
Carter Lam fell in their two doubles match with the point already decided.
The 'Bows grabbed a firm foothold of the match with a pair of wins to open singles play.
Jared Spiker put UH ahead by two with his 6-4, 6-1 defeated of Frattini. One singles was the second to finish, as Brooklyn topped Stakne for the second time with a 6-0, 6-4 straight-set win.
The Aggies did not go away quietly though, responding to win the next two finishes to make a match of it. At the four, Rice fell to Degardin in two close sets, 7-5, 6-4. Then
Chas Okamoto saw Westgate rally to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. With Hawai'i needing just one more point to win the match, Kovalyov topped Ramirez for the second time, 7-6, 6-4. Casanova lost to Pfister, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to complete the match.
UH will stay in Fresno, Calif. to take on Fresno State, who is hosting a slate of WAC matches this week. UH and FS will play Saturday, Mar. 24, at 1:00 p.m. PT.
