Men’s Volleyball Falls At No. 4 USC

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team dropped its fourth consecutive straight-set match in a 25-22, 25-18, 25-18 loss to No. 4 USC, Friday in the first of two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at the Galen Center.

The 13th-ranked Warriors (6-10, 3-8 MPSF) dropped their fifth consecutive league match overall and the first on their current four-match road trip to No. 4 USC and No. 2 Stanford.

Sophomore Harrison Carroll started his second career match and recorded six of his match-high 12 kills in the first set. The Orange, Calif., native hit .320 for the match and recorded five digs. Senior outside hitter Steven Hunt added eight kills and six digs while middle blocker Nick West had seven kills, five blocks, and three service aces.

Tanner Jansen led the Trojans (10-4, 8-4) with 12 kills on .500 hitting. Steven Shandrick added eight kills with no errors in 13 swings for a .615 clip. The Warriors held outside hitters Maddison McKibbin (4 kills, 6 errors) and Tony Ciarelli (3 kills, 5 errors) to negative hitting percentages.

As a team, both teams did not hit particularly well as USC hit .195 to UH's .070.

UH jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in Set 1 before giving the lead right back. The teams traded blows until 20-all, when the Trojans' Steven Shandrick took over with a kill and block on consecutive points for a two-point cushion Trojan lead. After a kill by UH's Jarrod Lofy, Shandrick answered again with another kill followed by a Maddison McKibbin kill. Tanner Jansen's kill ended it for the Trojans at 25-22.

USC took control early in Set 2 for an 8-3 lead. After a kill by Carroll, the Trojans reeled off five more points, spurred by two more Shandrick kills, for a commanding 13-4 lead. UH would not get any closer than six the rest of the way in a 25-18 defeat.

At the midway point of Set 3, the Trojans grabbed a 14-10 lead after consecutive Warrior hitting errors. That was all USC needed down the stretch as Jansen had three of his 12 kills to close out the match 25-18.

The teams play again Sunday at 1:00 p.m. PT (11:00 a.m. HT) at the Galen Center.
