HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (8-14, 3-4 WAC) fell to Utah State, 69-55 in a Western Athletic Conference contest.
Breanna Arbuckle led UH with 19 points while
Kamilah Jackson had a game-high 14 rebounds on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Arbuckle was 6-of-10 from the floor and 7-for-9 from the free-throw line. Arbuckle added seven rebounds with an assist, a steal and a block. Her block tied her with Jeanne Wade for fourth place all-time with 134 career blocked shots. This year Arbuckle leads UH with 33 swats.
Jackson had four offensive and 10 defensive boards to lead all players. However the Aggie defense was able to stymie her offensively, allowing her to score a career-low two points.
Vicky Tagalicod and
Kalei Adolpho both chipped in nine points apiece. Tagalicod also contributed with five rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal. Adolpho was second in the game with nine rebounds—six offensive and three defensive.
Utah State (15-6, 6-1 WAC) led from the get go and never looked back. The Aggies drained nine 3-pointers—including 4-of-5 for 80% in the second half. The Aggies had four players in double figures, led by Devyn Christensen who had a game-high 25 points—including USU's first 15 points of the game. Brooke Jackson added 16 and Ashlee Brown and Maddy Plunkett had 11 each.
Hawai`i out-rebounded Utah State, 40-36 but the Aggies edged the 'Bows in the paint, 24-to-22. Utah State translated UH's 17 turnovers into 23 points, while UH was able to convert USU's 13 mishaps into 13 points.
The Rainbow Wahine shot a 32.8 field goal percentage and hit just 3-of-15 shots from beyond the arch for 20%. The 'Bows played better in the second half, down by just one point 31-to-30, but every time UH threatened to cut their deficit to single digits, the Aggies responded and pulled away.
Hawai`i now begins the second half of their final season in the WAC. San Jose State comes to town next Saturday, Feb. 11 at 5:00 p.m.
