Men’s Volleyball Stuffed By No 1. UCLA

Box Score

HONOLULU – The No. 13 University of Hawai'i Warrior volleyball team was swept by top-ranked UCLA for the second straight night by a score of 25-21, 25-14, 25-19 Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Warriors fell to 6-9 overall and 3-7 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with their fourth straight loss.

One night after going toe-to-toe with UCLA (14-2, 9-1), UH was simply overwhelmed by the Bruins who looked every bit the top team in the nation. UCLA hit .366 for the match to just .090 for UH. The Bruin block proved the main culprits as UCLA out-blocked the Warriors, 17-2.

Jeremy Casebeer had a team-high 12 kills for the Bruins who won their 12th straight match. Meanwhile, four different players had at least five blocks for UCLA, led by Thomas Amberg with eight.

With UH hampered by the effective UCLA block, the Warrior offense found little wiggle room. Steven Hunt, Jarrod Lofy and JP Marks each had five kills with Lofy the most effective Warrior, hitting .714 on seven attempts.

In Set 1, the teams were tied 16-16, but UCLA slowly pulled away. The Bruins scored three straight points—capped by a Amberg and Nick Vogel double block to—to take the set 25-21.

The Bruins got off to a fast start in Set 2, claiming seven of the first nine points and extending its lead to 15-7 at the first media timeout. UCLA didn't let up taking the set 25-14 and handing UH its most decisive loss in a set this year.

The final set again saw the Bruins break away as they hit a scorching .500 en route to a 25-19 score. The match fittingly ended with Amberg and Kyle Caldwell teaming up on a block for the match's decisive point.

The Warriors next host Nittaidai in a pair of exhibition matches on Feb. 24 (7:00 p.m.) and Feb. 26 (5:00 p.m.).
