Men’s Golf Moves Up To Ninth At Burns Intercollegiate; Oride Tied For Ninth

KAHUKU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team continued its solid play at the 36th John A. Burns Intercollegiate following Thursday's second round at the Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course. The Warriors moved up to ninth place among the 18-team field.
 
California continues to lead the field, which includes five nationally ranked teams. The Golden Bears hold a four-shot lead over SMU, which posted the day's best team score of 278. Behind Cal (556) and SMU (560) are No. 25 New Mexico (566), No. 20 Duke (568), and No. 15 UNLV (569). Hawai'i is in ninth place equaling its first round score of 290 for two-round total of 580.
 
Individually, SMU's Sam Fidone's posted the day's low-round with a 5-under 67 and shares the 36-hole lead with Duke's Julian Suri at 9-under 135. Cal's Joel Stalter and Max Homa are in a three-way tie for third with Duke's Brinson Paolini at 7-under.
 
Starting on the back nine with wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour, four of the five Warriors shot over par, but none worst than 3-over, while junior Cory Oride was 1-under. Oride finished as the team's low round of the day at 3-under 69 and is currently tied for ninth place with a 36-hole score of 4-under 140.
 
Battling a cold, senior T.J. Kua shot a 2-over 74 on Thursday, to go along with his opening round 70 for a two-day total of even par 144, which is tied for 27th.
 
Sophomore Tommy Yamashita eagled the par-5 9th, his final hole of the day, to close with a 2-over 74 for a two-round total of 2-over 146. Sophomore Nainoa Calip rebounded from an opening round 77, to post a solid 1-over 73, while playing his back nine in 2-under and is at 6-over 150.
 
Junior Alex Chu shot 77, two shots better than his Round 1 score for a 156 total.
 
Competing as individuals for Hawai'i are David Saka (79-74), Jared Sawada (74-79), Brian Lee (81-77), Michael Koeneke (77-82), Ryan Kuroiwa (83-78), and Henry Park (88-80).
 
The tournament concludes on Friday with the third and final round which begins at 7:30 a.m.
