Former University of Hawai'i wide receiver Chad Owens was named the 2012 Gibson's Finest Canadian Football League's Most Outstanding Player. The Most Outstanding Player Award is handed out annually to the top player in the CFL.
Owens, a native of Honolulu who starred for the Warriors from 2001-04, helped the Toronto Argonauts win the 100
th Grey Cup. He became of the seventh Argo to win the Most Outstanding Player award in the league's history and was also selected as the CFL's East Division Most Outstanding Player.
In 2012, Owens broke a 15-year old league record held by Michael “Pinball” Clemons for combined yards in one season (3,840); became the first player in CFL history to lead the league in both receiving and kick return yards; and became the first player in pro football history to record three seasons with at least 3,000 combined yards, a feat that he achieved consecutively since 2010.
He averaged more than 220 combined yards per game, and nearly doubled his total for receiving yards in 2011 which was his single season career high. His best game was against Hamilton in the Labour Day Classic, when he finished with 136 kickoff return yards, 90 punt return yards and 176 receiving yards with one touchdown for a total of 402 combined yards – third most in CFL history, and the most in Argonauts' history.
In three seasons with Toronto, Owens has re-written the Argos' 139-year old record books. As of the end of the 2012 CFL season, Owens sits second all-time in punt return yards, kickoff returns, and total kick return yards behind Clemons. He tops the Argos' all-time list for most kickoff return yards in a season (1,750), kickoff return yards in a game (245), and total kick return yards in a season (2,701).
At UH, Owens was a second-team All-American in 2004, in which he set an NCAA record with five punt returns for touchdowns. He also tied the NCAA record with eight career returns for touchdowns (six punts and two kickoffs). He is the school's record holder for career all-purpose yards (5,461) and once held the NCAA record for single-game kickoff return yardage with 342 against BYU in 2001.
