HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team was overpowered by No. 4 Stanford, 69-42 on the second night of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic. The Rainbow Wahine were led by
Ashleigh Karaitiana's 14 points and Kamilah Martin's six rebounds.
The Rainbow Wahine played very physical with the Cardinal and UH committed a season-low 14 turnovers, but Stanford's overall size was a little too much to overcome. The Cardinal out-rebounded the 'Bows, 42-to-31 and stifled UH's offense to a 30.8% field-goal percentage for the game. Stanford also held the advantage in points in the paint, 26-to-20 and was able to score 16 second-chance points to UH's five.
In the first half, the 'Bows battled early on, going on a 11-to-4 run to cut their deficit to one point, trailing 13-14 with less that 12 minutes left on the clock. But soon thereafter, Martin picked up a second quick foul and had to sit the rest of the half. After Martin's exit, Stanford went on a 14-0 run and never looked back. Stanford out-rebounded UH, 39-to-21 in the first 20 minutes. In the second half, the Cardinal extended their lead to as much as 29 points. But Martin tried to keep the 'Bows in the game, scoring all nine of her points in the last half.
Karaitiana's 14 points was a career-high for the freshman from Sydney, Australia. She also added three rebounds.
Destiny King scored eight points with five boards and an assist in the game.
The Rainbow Wahine conclude their first tournament of the year on Sunday, when they face No. 1 Baylor (3-1) at 2:30 p.m.
