VIDEO: Women's Basketball Holds Off UT Martin, 73-69

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team battled back in the second half to defeat UT Martin, 73-69 to even their record at 1-1 on the first night of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic. Kamilah Martin recorded her 30th career double-double posting a team-high 18 points with 10 rebounds. It marked the first win for the Rainbow Wahine under head coach Laura Beeman.
 
Martin was 4-of-6 from the floor and 10-of-17 from the free throw line. She also added three assists and two steals in 34 minutes of action. Three other Rainbow Wahine tallied double figures in points—Destiny King scored 11 while Pua Kailiawa and Kanisha Bello came off the bench to pour in 12 and 11 points respectively. King was 5-of-8 in field goals and had seven rebounds with a game-high six assists. Ashleigh Karaitiana added five points but also secured 10 rebounds with three assists, a block and a pair of steals. As a team, the 'Bows outscored the Skyhawks, 26-to-20 in the paint and outscored their bench 27-to-15 while out-rebounding UTM, 44-to-33.
 
In the first half, the Rainbow Wahine built as big a lead of 12 points with 4:51 left in the half on an 11-to-2 run. UH took a 33-23 lead into halftime with Martin leading the way with 10 points and three rebounds. But the 'Bows got good support off the bench with Kailiawa scoring eight on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor and Bello added six points after sinking a pair of treys.
 
In the start of the second half, UH extended their lead to 15 points, but after UTM started to apply full-court pressure, the Skyhawks started to chip away at their deficit and went on a 23-to-7 run to catch and overtake the 'Bows on a 3-pointer by Katie Schubert. After that, the game was tied five times with UTM controlling the lead. But Kamilah Martin sank a pair of free throws with 5:07 left to tie and then take the lead for good. UH built their lead back to seven points, but UTM got a 3-pointer and a jumper by Megan White to cut UH's lead to two points with less than two minutes left in the game. UH's Bello came through with two clutch buckets as the seconds ticked down to keep UH in front and Sydney Haydel sank one-of-two free throws with seven seconds left to seal the win by four points.
 
 The Rainbow Wahine contine the tournament tomorrow when they take on No. 4 Stanford at 7:00 p.m. The Cardinal upset No. 1 Baylor in the tourney opener, 71-69.
