WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team gave a valiant effort but fell short in the win column with a 1-0 double-overtime setback to Cal State Fullerton in a Big West match Sunday night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Erica Mazeau scored the game-winner in the 109
th minute on a Fullerton counterattack to give the Titans their third straight win in dramatic fashion. After a UH corner kick, Mazeau collected the ball on her own side of the field and made a nearly 60-yard run before putting away a low liner past
Kanani Taaca.
The Rainbow Wahine (6-6-2, 1-2 BWC) were just 79 seconds away from extending their school-record 12-match home unbeaten streak but instead suffered their first loss at Waipi'o Stadium since a 3-0 loss to Cal last August. It was also the team's first loss in its last eight overtime affairs.
It was a match of missed opportunities for the Rainbow Wahine who doubled the Titans in shots, 16-8, including a 15-4 advantage in regulation. One of those prime opportunities game just minutes before the eventual game-winner when a
Krystal Pascua's attempt from 16 yards bounced off the crossbar.
Ten different Rainbow Wahine recorded a shot in the match, but none reached the back of the net despite numerous chances near the mouth of Fullerton's goal. Titan goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic recorded five saves, while Taaca also finished with five.
The Rainbow Wahine continue Big West action on the road with a pair of matches, beginning with a meeting with UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m. PT.
