WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team picked up its first-ever Big West win with a resounding 2-0 shutout of UC Riverside Friday night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Rainbow Wahine (6-5-2, 1-1 BWC) snapped a season-long four match losing streak with the win. UH also tied a school record in the process as the Rainbow Wahine extended their unbeaten streak at home to 12 matches dating back to last season. UH is 5-0-2 at home this year.
The Rainbow Wahine put a solid 90 minutes together, but absolutely dominated in the second half. UH scored both their goals after the break, while holding the Highlanders (4-7-2, 0-3 BWC) without a single shot in the second half.
McKenzie McGoldrick scored in the 59
th minute—her third goal of the season—while
Chelsea Miyake added an insurance goal in the 74
th minute also for her third score of the season.
UH's first goal was set up by a crafty
Tiana Fujimoto who eluded the UCR defense and sent a through ball to McGoldrick, who put home a low-liner from 15 yards out. A pressing UH offense got another opportunity less than 15 minutes later when
Christy Watanabe drew a foul in the box. Miyake promptly put home the ensuing penalty kick to give the 'Bows a 2-0 advantage.
That would be more than enough for the Rainbow Wahine who allowed just four total shots by the Highlanders in notching its second shutout of the season.
UH continues Big West action on Sunday, Oct. 7 when its hosts Cal State Fullerton. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
