Women’s Soccer Ends Year With Hard-Earned Draw

IRVINE, Calif. – In its final match of the 2012 season, the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team refused to lose in a 0-0 double-overtime tie against defending Big West champions UC Irvine Sunday afternoon at Anteater Stadium.

UCI unloaded for 34 shots on the Rainbow Wahine, but none would go in as UH goalkeeper Kanani Taaca gave one of the best defensive performances in program history. In her final appearance in a UH uniform, the senior tallied a career-high 15 saves. None were bigger than her stop of Rachel Wood's penalty kick attempt in the first overtime period, helping preserve the season-ending draw.

UH tallied just three shots in the match—one each by Alex Gerrain, Krystal Pascua and Addison Carroll. But two days after suffering a 5-0 loss at Long Beach State, the Rainbow Wahine showed their resilience by posting their third shutout of the season. UCI out-shot UH, 23-3, in regulation and 11-0 in overtime, but still could not score.

The Rainbow Wahine, who were knocked out of postseason contention last week, ended the season 8-9-3 overall and 3-5-1 in its debut season in the Big West. UH again exceeded expectations under second-year head coach Michele Nagamine. UH tallied its most wins since the 2008 season and finished sixth in the 10-team Big West after being picked to finished last in the preseason poll.

The team also a tied a pair of school records earlier in the year when it went unbeaten in seven straight matches during one stretch and later in the year it extended its home unbeaten streak to 12 matches with a 2-0 win over UC Riverside for its first-ever Big West win.

The finale versus UCI marked the last matches for Taaca and fellow seniors Amber Fuller, Michelle Nakasone, and Christy Watanabe.  Senior captain Rachel Domingo had her season cut short in September with a knee injury. Taaca finished her career having played every minute in goal during her junior and seniors season, a remarkable string of more than 3,600 minutes. She leaves UH ranking among the school leaders in saves (266), shutouts (12) and matches played (71) and started in goal (66).
