Cross Country Completes Big West Championship

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team placed eighth in its first Big West Championship in 17 years, Saturday at UC Riverside's Agricultural Operations Course.
 
The Rainbow Wahine totaled 283 points. Cal Poly (43) edged defending champion UC Davis (46) by three points for the team title, its first Big West crown since 2001. Cal Poly's Laura Hollander captured the individual title, completing the 6K course in 19:12.6 ahead of runner-up Sarah Sumpter of UC Davis (19:44.4).
 
Hollander shattered both the course and conference record by 45 seconds and became just the second female athlete to post a sub 20-minute time in the 6K since the championship moved to the new distance in 2003.
 
Junior Kevyn Murphy was UH's top finisher at 21:48.9 for 35th place followed by senior Ashlee Jimenez (23:22.7, 67th), sophomore Louise Mulvey (24:01.7, 74th), freshman Amity Gregg (24:08.9, 75th), and freshman Kelsie Kobayashi (24:20.5, 79th).
 
Also competing for UH were sophomore Tiare' Nakashima (24:20.9, 80th) and senior Megan Dart (24:56.6, 81st).
 
Cal Poly and UC Davis each placed three runners in the Top 10.
