HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team kicked off its 2012-13 season with a 72-47 exhibition win over UH Hilo to begin a new era under first-year head coach
Laura Beeman. Freshman
Destiny King poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the 'Bows while junior Kamilah Martin recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 points and game-high 12 rebounds on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
King had a strong outing in her first collegiate game, going 7-for-8 from the floor including 3-for-3 from beyond the 3-point arch—which included banking in a half-court shot as time wound down to end the first half. She also was 5-for-5 from the free throw line with six rebounds and three assists.
Martin (formerly Jackson) came in off the bench after spending much of the week out with an injury, to notch her trademark double-double in the season opener. She went a perfect 5-for-5 in field goals while corralling one offensive and 11 defensive boards.
The starting five were comprised all of UH newcomers with senior transfer
Monica DeAngelis at the point; redshirt freshman
Ashleigh Karaitiana and King at guard; with junior transfers
Diane Moore and
Pua Kailiawa at forward and center respectively. All 12 Rainbow Wahine that suited up saw action in the exhibition game. Hawai`i took an early 4-2 lead and never looked back and in the second half went on a 14-0 run starting at the 7:30 mark to pull away to a 30 point lead with 1:55 left in the game. The 'Bows took advantage of their size, outscoring their opponents 30-to-12 in the paint while outrebounding the Vulcans 46-to-23.
Moore, a junior transfer out of Diablo Junior College, made a strong impact in the first half, scoring 13 of her 15 points in the first 20 minutes.
Shawna-Lei Kuehu had just two points, but dished out a game-high five assists with five rebounds and two steals.
The Rainbow Wahine led the Vulcans 44-26 at the half, led by King's 16 points. She also racked up three rebounds and three assists and drained a half-court shot as time wound down to end the first half. Moore also scored well, tallying 13 points while the two point guards—DeAngelis and
Marissa Wimbley both had three assists apiece to pace the 'Bows.
